Labor in New Mexico
Santa Teresa draws from a diversified, youthful and bilingual work force of over 360,000 in a combined area that includes El Paso, Texas and Dona Ana County, New Mexico. Wages in the region are extremely competitive. According to the New Mexico Border Authority, low absenteeism, low turnover, high productivity and hard work characterize the Santa Teresa workforce. Union presence in the manufacturing sectors is almost non¬existent on either side of the border.
The area’s unemployment rate has averaged around ten percent over the past seven years while the civilian labor force has expanded by nearly 20,000. Job creation is a primary concern for government and other agencies in the area. The population is young and expanding. The median age in the area is 27 and the population is growing at a rate of 3.4% annually, creating an excellent source of labor for new employers looking to locate in Santa Teresa.
Manufacturing is one of the primary engines driving the Santa Teresa economy as well as that of the surrounding area. Thirteen percent of non-agricultural employment in the area is in manufacturing related industries. Major manufacturing and other enterprises have helped create a workforce with a high degree of technical know-how. Major textile, telecommunications, metal stamping and other operations currently employ 1,200 workers in the Santa Teresa Business Center
