Education in New Mexico 

The educational community in the Santa Teresa area includes public and private primary and secondary institutions, as well as two-year, four-year and graduate public and private institutions of higher learning, and a branch of the Texas Tech University School of Medicine which instructs third and fourth year medical students. Opportunities for worker training specifically designed to meet the needs of area companies are a particularly important part of education in the Santa Teresa area.

Gadsden Independent Schools

Gadsden Independent Schools is the school district to which Santa Teresa public schools belong. The school district resides within Dona Ana County, New Mexico and borders El Paso County, Texas to the east, the city of Las Cruces to the north, and Mexico to the south. It is geographically the largest school district in the area and is comprised of two high schools, one alternative school, three middle schools and eleven elementary schools. Student enrollment has approximated 12,500 in recent school years with around 400 students graduating from high school in the district on an annual basis.

Gadsden Independent Schools is among the fastest growing school districts in the area and has a high number of immigrant and limited English proficiency students. Enrollment is growing by approximately six percent per year, second in the area only to the Socorro Independent School District in El Paso, Texas. Santa Teresa High School is located just two miles from the Santa Teresa Business Center and elementary and middle schools are also located close by. 

Private and Parochial Primary and Secondary Schools

Opportunities for private and parochial primary and secondary education are widely available in the Santa Teresa area. In neighboring El Paso there are 41 private and parochial schools representing a full range of faiths and teaching systems including Catholic, Episcopal, Jewish, Methodist and Montessori schools.  Nine such schools operate in Santa Teresa, Las Cruces and the remainder of Dona Ana County

Colleges and Universities

Advanced education programs abound in the area.  Two four-year universities, two community college systems, two universities adapted to accommodate the schedules of working professionals and one medical school all serve the Santa Teresa area.
New Mexico State University in Las Cruces (NMSU) and The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) both offer a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees including bachelors and masters programs in industrial and mechanical engineering. UTEP and NMSU offer doctoral programs in materials sciences and engineering, and industrial engineering, respectively.  UTEP is home to the Texas Manufacturing Assistance Center of the Institute for Manufacturing and Materials Management as well as an international engineering graduate exchange center.

The Doña Ana Branch Community College in Santa Teresa, Sunland Park and Las Cruces, New Mexico and the El Paso Community College offer vocational-technical certificates and associate degrees in a wide range of specialized and technical programs as well as work force training.  The colleges are designed to help local residents achieve personal education goals and to meet the training needs of local business, industry and government.  In addition, the Santa Teresa location offers customized training programs designed specifically for a corporation’s requirements.  They also can provide pre-screening and pre-training of potential employees.
The University of Phoenix, Santa Teresa campus offers bachelors and masters degrees in business administration and computer information systems. Webster University, also in Santa Teresa, offers graduate degrees in business administration.  Both universities offer evening classes to accommodate the busy schedules of working professionals.

Medicine in El Paso instructs third and fourth year medical students.  The school also provides health care services to community members.
The universities, colleges, private, parochial and public schools in the Santa Teresa area offer a full range of educational opportunities at all levels. This ensures a well-prepared labor force in Santa Teresa for the years to come.
